Day 16 Departure
Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport, AAN representative will welcome us and provide transportation to our hotel; following check-in, we'll refresh and rest before enjoying a welcome dinner hosted by AAN in the evening, concluding with an overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Exploring UNESCO World Heritage Sites, our tour includes Durbar Square, providing insights into royal life; the revered Pashupatinath temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site; Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple; and Bouddhanath Stupa, one of the world's largest stupas. At noon, we meet fellow participants and discuss our journey, concluding the day with an overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Embarking on an early morning flight to Lukla, the starting point for all Everest treks, we meet rest of our team and commence our trek. The trail leads us through Cheplung village, offering a glimpse of the sacred, unclimbed Mt. Khumbila, as we gradually descend to Phakding, where we spend the night.
Navigating through a pine forest, our journey takes us north along the Benkar valley trail, crossing Dudh Koshi River and traversing Chumoa and Monjo villages before reaching the entrance of Everest National Park. After crossing a suspension bridge, we pass through Jorsale village, walking alongside the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. Ascending a steep trail, we arrive at Namche Bazaar, the largest town in the Everest region, for an overnight stay.
Exploring Namche Bazaar, the primary town in the Everest or Khumbu region, with its government offices, ATMs, internet cafes, shops, restaurants, and vibrant market, we have the option to hike up to Sagarmatha National Park to witness the sunrise over the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde, and more. For those interested in a day hike, a trek to Khumjung village is available, where we can visit the Hillary School and a monastery that houses a yeti scalp. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.
The trek to Phunki Thanga is a leisurely stroll, and from there, we ascend towards Tengboche village, home to the renowned Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Everest region, situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sagarmatha National Park. Blessed with panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku, the monastery opens at 3:00 pm. Arriving by this time allows us to witness a Buddhist religious ceremony. Overnight stay in Tengboche.
Descending through lush forests of birch, conifer, and rhododendron trees, we revel in stunning views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Trekking downhill leads us to Debuche, where we cross the Imja River to reach Pangboche. Continuing our journey through the Imja Valley and Lobuche River, we ascend to Dingboche, a picturesque village adorned with beautiful barley, potato, and buckwheat fields, complemented by grazing animals dotting the landscape.
Utilizing a day in Dingboche for acclimatization, we ascend a ridge behind the village, where we are treated to breathtaking views of six of the world's tallest peaks, including Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Additionally, the majestic Cholatse and Taboche peaks grace the scenery. To the northwest, more Himalayan peaks rise above the Khumbu Khola Valley, with Lobuche West, Lobuche East, and Lhotse standing prominently. Another vantage point on the ridge offers a picturesque view of the Imja Khola Valley and the charming Dingboche village. Overnight stay in Dingboche.
The trek from Dinboche to Duglha is a short journey across a wide pass, offering a welcomed change from the straight path. The majestic Himalayas surround us at the beginning, and the valley narrows as we approach Dusa. Passing the 1953 Everest Expedition campsite, we catch sight of Mt. Pumori. Descending and curving, we say farewell to Mt. Pumori, cross a stream, and ascend to Duglha, a tiny village with a vast strand of prayer flags. After reaching Duglha, a 45-minute to an hour walk leads to the Memorial Shrine. Overnight stay in Duglha.
Ascending Chupki Lhara, the trail winds through boulder-strewn slopes, offering striking mountain views. The ridge top, adorned with prayer flags and stone memorials, honors climbers who lost their lives on Mt. Everest. Descending to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, panoramic views of Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori, and Mahalangur Himal unfold. Crossing the Khumbu Glacier reveals the presence of Mt. Nuptse. The day concludes with an overnight stay in Lobuche.
On this day, we navigate both ascents and descents along a glacier path, traversing rough terrains. Approaching the base camp, we marvel at the intricate melt patterns and admire the gracefully rounded ice towers on the upper Khumbu glacier. The Everest Base Camp itself is breathtaking, offering stunning views of Nuptse, Khumbuste, Lingtren, and Pumori mountains. After immersing ourselves in the beauty, we backtrack towards Gorak Shep for an overnight stay.
Early in the morning, we embark on a cold and dark journey to Kala Patthar. The trail is steep but manageable, and as we ascend, the silhouettes of Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse mountains emerge in the predawn light. Reaching the summit, we're rewarded with an outstanding panoramic view, including the world's tallest mountain, Everest, and other formidable Himalayan peaks. After savoring the moment, we descend back to Gorak Shep, which is a relatively easier trek compared to the ascent.
Upon our return to Gorak Shep, we indulge in a well-deserved breakfast before descending to Pheriche, where we spend the night. Overnight stay in Pheriche.
Today's trek involves losing around 2,000 feet in elevation as we navigate a trail characterized by numerous ups and downs. Descending through hillsides adorned with rhododendron and juniper trees, we cross a bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. The journey continues with a rapid descent through a pine forest, providing opportunities to spot mountain goats, pheasants, and other wildlife common to the area. The trail eventually reaches Sansa, offering picturesque views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Nuptse mountains. Winding paths through forests lead us to Namche Bazaar, where we conclude the day's trek. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.
Commencing our journey to Namche Bazaar, we navigate rocky terrain, primarily descending alongside the Dudh Koshi River. The trail includes crossing several suspension bridges, passing monasteries, and traversing villages before reaching Lukla. Upon arrival in Lukla, the remainder of the day is dedicated to rest, marking the conclusion of our mountain adventure. Overnight stay in Lukla.
Following our extensive mountain journey, we board an early morning flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, the day offers the option to rest or engage in souvenir shopping. For those interested in further exploration of Kathmandu, our guides are available to assist with both shopping and sightseeing. In the evening, a farewell dinner is planned to celebrate the successful completion of our journey. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Today marks the conclusion of our journey in Nepal. Our representative will transfer to the airport on time.
